Subject Line: What Does James Bond Have That You Don’t?
Hello again, Friend,
Here's Part 2 of the f-r-e-e Newsletter series you requested:
Simple New Brain Science Unlocks Your Health and Happiness!
Last time, we talked about some of the ways our brains get out of balance. Did you miss that email? You can read it at www.NeuroBalanceNow.com/NeuroNews1.htm .
Imagine you are James Bond. Your assignment is to once again save the world from the latest secret doomsday weapon. You are sent to a far-flung corner of the world where your guide is quickly killed under mysterious circumstances. You don’t know who to trust, you don’t know who to turn to. Is that sexy, gorgeous goddess really impressed by your sophisticated looks and good taste or is she about to slit your throat when you reach over to pick up your martini?
Before you can find out, the glass in your hand is shattered by a bullet that was meant for you. Next thing you know, you’re being followed in a life-or-death motorcycle chase down narrow streets and back alleys. A truck pulls out in front of you, you can’t stop, and after smashing into it, you black out for an unknown period of time. When you come to, you’re dangling in a completely black room. You have a pounding headache and you can’t tell for certain which pains are severe bruises and which are broken bones. You can hear something dripping. The smell of blood is in the air. Off in the distance you can hear the rumbling of ominous machinery and an occasional anguished shriek.
We’ll find out how this all turns out below. There’s a reason I asked you to imagine all this. Unlike James Bond, who seems to have an infinite capacity to maintain his wits and his cool, wouldn’t you be terrified and exhausted if this ACTUALLY were to happen to you? You see, we are taught by our parents and by our media entertainment that no matter what gets thrown at us, we’re supposed to be able to handle it. We’re supposed to stay cool. We’re never supposed to get scared, worry, lose our temper, become exhausted and so on.
But the fact of the matter is, WE DO! Why is that? Simple. We are not built to handle an infinite amount of stress. Moreover, our brains have a limited ability to handle extraordinary circumstances.
Let’s drill down a little deeper into this. Your brain has reservoirs of chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are used up with your every action, feeling and thought. Ideally, they are replaced daily by the foods you eat. However, what often happens is that the body must replace them from its own stores. If this goes on long enough, the body stores are depleted.
Of course, it comes as no surprise that the more stress you have, the quicker these stores can become depleted. The more depleted your body gets, the more difficult it becomes to be calm, cool and collected, like James Bond. Instead, you become more and more like somebody ready for the psych ward!
However, now that you think you’re about to go over the edge, you realize that you’ve got to hide it, even from yourself. Stress on top of stress! This draws down your body’s waning neurotransmitter reserves even faster!
You’ve probably heard stories from people who say such things as, “I don’t know how I did it. I was so afraid my son was going to be crushed by that car that I lifted it up off his body!” They were thrown into a fight or flight mode and reacted purely from adrenaline. When your life becomes difficult enough and you are being driven enough by fear, you start to run more and more on adrenaline. This eventually exhausts your adrenal glands. It also exhausts your reservoirs of neurotransmitters.
When you burn the candle at both ends, sooner or later there’s no candle left. It’s the same with your neurotransmitters. Did you ever find yourself secretly thinking, “I’m not as young as I used to be?” A neurotransmitter deficiency makes you feel older, sometimes much older than your years.
Back to James Bond and his infinite supply of neurotransmitters. His abductors had strip-searched him when he was unconscious to make sure he couldn’t use any devices hidden in his clothing to escape. Fortunately, they didn’t notice he could create light by flicking two of his specially equipped fingernails together.
Because he is calm, cool and collected, he can easily recall his Houdini-like training under stress. He makes enough light with his fingernails so he can see his fetters and quickly slips out of them. He manages to hide behind the door as it swings open to reveal his torturer, who he surprises, subdues and takes his clothes. Since none of his neurotransmitters have been depleted, he easily overwhelms the guards as they pour in.
As he’s making his escape, he passes through the chamber with the secret superweapon and he sets a generator so it starts to overload. While he stands on a perilous cliff overlooking the ocean, the secret facility explodes behind him. Fortunately, he manages to dive under water before the fireball reaches him. Not long after he surfaces, he is picked up by a helicopter because headquarters noticed the huge fireball from a reconnaissance satellite.
Because he has plenty of neurotransmitters, he never questions his ability to do anything.
Oh, and the …..goddess? He’s able to spend a very active, repeatedly satisfying night with her (once again, thanks to his infinite neurotransmitter supply!)
A quick question: ARE YOU A PRIMITIVE CAVE PERSON? (“Excuse me?” you may say.) Find the answer in our next installment of this newsletter: “Is there a Caveman Inside You?” Look for it in a few days!
