Subject Line:  What’s In Store For You?

Dear Friend,

Birth is such a miracle!

But first, last time, we talked about the Hurricane Season within us.  Did you miss that email?  You can read it at www.NeuroBalanceNow.com/NeuroNews5.htm .

It’s a common misconception that you and I enter this world at birth with nothing.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  We come in with lotsa stuff inside our bag of skin!

If we were to have to BUY the wide range of chemicals we’re born with, it would amount to millions of dollars.  And we don’t even have the technology to assemble them yet!

So, when we’re born, among other things, we’re endowed with a generous store of neurotransmitters.  And boy, are we gonna need ‘em!  Because, in this crazy world, they sure get depleted fast.  And it’s almost impossible to figure out how to sustain healthy neurotransmitter levels.

In the past hundred years our society has gone through a big change.  We’ve drifted away from a lifestyle that can naturally replenish our neurotransmitters through a healthy diet.

Of course, history tells us about occupations that used toxins which caused extreme mental deviations, but these sensational stories are more the exception than the rule.  For example, “hatters,” (people who made top hats) used a chemical so toxic that it eventually made them go insane after inhaling it for years.  Thus the expression: “Mad as a hatter.”

So here you are, a little baby, bubbling with life. You’re alert and full of energy and you grow, grow, grow. However, as today’s parents are well aware, there are innumerable unnatural distractions to entice a young mind and body.

Maybe you start to love eating highly processed foods.  Maybe you love to watch TV a lot.  Maybe, after a few years, you get overwhelmed with a busy schedule of school, activities, TV, friends and homework.  Maybe your peers lead you a bit astray. You are stressed. Many teens are burned out in various ways.

“Burned out” is one way of saying “loss of neurotransmitter levels.”  Hey, what happened to all those good brain chemicals you came in with?

It sure is hard to figure out what a healthy lifestyle is anymore!  How do you avoid stress?  When was the last time you read a nutritional label that told you what effect that particular food is going to have  on your neurotransmitters?

In fact, because we really don’t know yet what effect food has on neurotransmitters, it’s very difficult to know much about it at all!  I mean, when you go to eat that bag of potato chips, what’s going to happen next?

And, what’s even scarier, there are almost no studies on the long-term effects of medications on your neurotransmitters.  (Long pause before you pop that Prozac!)

Fortunately, because of recent breakthroughs in the science of Neurobiology, we can now both measure and replace these neurotransmitters.  As I mentioned, it took decades to deplete your neurotransmitters.  Is it unreasonable that it would take months to replenish them?

Did you know that there are more than a dozen different neurotransmitters?  Because each one of us has a unique personality, we draw down our neurotransmitter reserves differently.

For example, Jim has always had trouble getting a good night’s sleep, but lately he’s had episodes where he’s very scared, has tightness in the chest, and has trouble breathing.  His doctor tells him these episodes are called panic attacks.  Jim has depleted his stores of the neurotransmitter Serotonin.

Meanwhile, Tom has always had some difficulty paying attention in class, but lately he has been just about unable to focus or concentrate on anything.  Tom has become deficient in GABA.

Every winter, Mary’s migraines get worse.  But now, even this last summer they were really bad.  Mary is deficient in progesterone as well as serotonin.

Bill’s adrenal glands are burned out.  He has always been quick to anger or to flee from difficult situations.  He also easily gets thrown into a tizzy.  He is out of balance in the neurotransmitter Epinephrine.

Pamela has a terrible sense of urgency about just about everything in her life.  She is also anxious.  She has become extremely impatient with her husband, her children, her co-workers, her friends and her extended family.  She always thinks everything must get done instantaneously, and this makes the people in her life want less and less to be around her.  Pamela has a severe imbalance of the neurotransmitter Norepinephrine.

Unfortunately, Helen has Alzheimer’s disease.  She has lost most of her memory.  It is extremely likely that the balance of the neurotransmitter Glutamate in her brain is way out of whack.

All her life Emily has had terrible allergies that have made her miserable.  Spider bites cause her to swell horribly and sustain huge red welts all over her body.  She is highly allergic to many toxins in the environment, and must lead the life of a recluse.  Emily has a severe imbalance of the neurotransmitter Histamine.

Then we have Marina, who is a hyperactive 5th grader.  She has been diagnosed with ADHD.  She has abnormally high levels of the neurotransmitter Dopamine.

Lastly, our friend Frank has been hospitalized several times for schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.  He has very high levels of the neurotransmitter PEA.

You know, human beings are so different from each other!  That’s why it’s so important for you to be treated individually.  Since each of us draws down our neurotransmitter reserves differently, we need to replenish them in totally unique ways!

Would YOU like to be treated individually?
